Olympic appearances: [1] Paris 2024 [finished 48th]
Tyler Smith won his spot at Paris through one of two universality places handed out by the Tripartite Commission on offer designed to support smaller, emerging triathlon nations.
His seventh-place finish at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in 2023 proved decisive in ensuring he joined Dame Flora Duffy and Erica Hawley in Bermuda’s Olympic triathlon team.
Smith, based in Boulder, Colorado, along with Duffy and Hawley, raced worldwide in 2024 chasing his Olympic dream.
Among his best showings were a tenth-place finish at the American Triathlon Championships in Miami, and sixth at the Americas Triathlon Cup La Paz in Bolivia.
Smith has a history of rising to the big occasion after producing an impressive thirteenth-place finish at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
Update: Tyler Smith said he was “super proud” of making his Olympic debut in the men’s triathlon at the Paris Games today [July 31].
Smith, 25, finished 48th in 1hr 51min 59sec and said his first experience of competing on the biggest stage in his sport had been a learning curve.
“It’s mixed emotions,” Smith told Bernews. “I’m super proud to get here, but it’s not the result I would have wanted.
“I’ve had success at the Commonwealth Games [in Birmingham in 2022] and the Pan American Games [in Santiago, Chile, last year], and I’m usually able to have a good day in these major competitions, but that wasn’t possible today.
“I’ll have a closer look at the race with my coach.”
